Niche-picking for new TikTok accounts
How narrow should my TikTok niche be when starting out?
5 min read
New TikTok accounts often stall not because the content is bad, but because it is too broad. A ranker with no history of your account uses each video to guess what topic you belong to; scattered topics produce scattered distribution.
The three-video test
Look at your last three uploads. If a viewer could not predict the fourth from those three, the niche is too wide. Narrowing does not mean posting the same thing — it means the same theme through different formats.
Niche down for the algorithm, widen through hooks
The niche keeps distribution consistent. Variation inside the niche — different hooks, different formats, different lengths — keeps the audience from getting bored. Both matter; only one is optional.
Give the niche 30 videos before judging
TikTok's per-account signal is noisy for the first several uploads. Thirty videos in a single niche gives enough data to see whether the topic has an audience on the platform at all.
When to pivot
If three consecutive videos in a proven format hit under 10% of your usual reach, the audience has moved on from that topic. Adjust the topic, not the format that was working.
