Anatomy of a scroll-stopping TikTok hook
What makes someone stop scrolling on TikTok in the first second?
5 min read
The average TikTok viewer decides in under a second whether to keep watching. The visual, the caption, and the sound all fire at once — a hook is the combination, not just the first line spoken.
Three hook layers
- Visual: the first frame should look different from the frame the viewer just scrolled past.
- Text overlay: a short line that either states a promise or creates an information gap.
- Audio: either a spoken hook in the first word, or a trending sound whose drop lines up with your first cut.
Information gap beats intrigue-bait
"You're using your microwave wrong" works because it names a specific thing you already do. "Wait until you see this" does not, because there is nothing concrete to be curious about.
Match the hook to the payoff
The strongest predictor of a Reel or TikTok going wide is not the hook alone — it is whether the payoff feels proportional. Overselling the first second and underdelivering the last five is the single most common reason for a strong start with a weak finish.
