Pitching independent Spotify playlists
How do independent artists get on Spotify playlists?
5 min read
Independent playlists — curated by fans, blogs, and small tastemakers rather than Spotify's editorial team — are a realistic first-year target. The process is a numbers game, but the numbers only work if the pitch is targeted.
Find playlists that match, not playlists that are big
A playlist with 3,000 followers who actively listen to your genre outperforms a 50,000-follower playlist that is 90% skips for your sound. Skip rate is measurable — Spotify tracks it, curators care about it.
Pitch with the track, not around it
The strongest pitches are two sentences and a private Spotify link. Long biographies and press releases lower reply rates. Curators are listeners first; the track has to do most of the work.
Never pay for guaranteed placements
"Guaranteed playlist placement" services almost always deliver bot-driven plays on burner playlists. Spotify detects this and suppresses the track. Legitimate curators do not offer guaranteed placement — they offer to listen.
Track responses, follow up once
Keep a simple spreadsheet: playlist, curator, date pitched, response. One polite follow-up after two weeks is fine; further follow-ups produce diminishing returns and hurt future pitches.
