Profile & bio SEO on Instagram
How do I optimize my Instagram profile so people actually follow?
4 min read
Most profile visits end in a scroll, not a follow. Small copy and layout choices on the profile page decide which side of that split you land on.
Name field is a keyword field
The @username is your handle. The name field directly under it is indexed by Instagram search. Using it for a searchable descriptor โ "Anna ยท Film Photography" rather than "Anna Smith" โ meaningfully increases discoverability in the search tab.
Bio line should say who it is for
Bios that describe the account ("Photographer. Traveller. Coffee.") convert worse than bios that describe the viewer ("Film photography tips for beginners ยท New tutorial each Sunday"). The second version answers "is this for me?" in one line.
Pin the three posts that explain the account
Pinned posts are the first thing visitors see. Pick one that shows range, one that shows your best result, and one that shows personality. Rotate them when a new post outperforms the pinned set.
Highlights are navigation, not archives
Treat Story highlights as menu items: About, Work, FAQ, Testimonials. Keep covers visually consistent so the grid reads as a designed page, not a scrapbook.
The first 1K followers checklist puts these fixes in order for a new account.
