Hashtag strategy that still works
Do hashtags still matter on Instagram, and how should I use them?
4 min read
Hashtags are no longer a primary distribution channel on Instagram, but they still act as topic labels the ranker uses to decide who your post is relevant to. Treating them as categorization — not as a reach hack — is what works today.
Use three to five, not thirty
Meta's own guidance and multiple public tests point to the same conclusion: after roughly five hashtags, extra tags add noise without adding reach. Pick three to five that genuinely describe the post.
Mix specificity tiers
A useful pattern is one broad tag (e.g. #photography), one niche tag (#filmphotographyuk), and one community tag your audience actually browses. Broad tags provide breadth; niche tags provide relevance.
Put them in the caption, not the first comment
The old first-comment trick no longer changes ranking. Placing hashtags at the end of the caption keeps them out of the way visually and gives Instagram the topic signal at the same time as the text.
Rotate, don't repeat
Using the exact same hashtag block on every post is one of the patterns Instagram's spam systems watch for. Keeping a rotating pool of 20–30 relevant tags and picking a fresh handful per post avoids that.
Once posts are consistently categorized, the profile & bio SEO guide covers how to turn the resulting profile visits into follows.
