Reels on Facebook — what changes vs Instagram
Should I post the same Reels on Facebook as on Instagram?
5 min read
Facebook and Instagram Reels share infrastructure but not audiences. Cross-posting the same video works, but tuning for the Facebook player earns more of Facebook's separate distribution pool.
Facebook viewers skew older
The median Facebook Reels viewer is significantly older than on Instagram. Reels that lean on Gen Z shorthand — specific slang, current TikTok trends — often underperform on Facebook even when they hit on Instagram.
Captions are non-negotiable
A larger share of Facebook Reels viewers watch muted. Burned-in captions (not auto-generated overlays) noticeably raise average watch time on the platform.
Length can be longer
Where Instagram rewards tight 15-second Reels, Facebook viewers stay for 30–60 seconds if the topic supports it. Do not artificially cut content that has more to say.
Watch the Facebook-only metrics
Creator Studio shows Facebook Reels performance separately. A Reel that did nothing on Instagram can be a top performer on Facebook — treat them as separate channels for reporting.
