Ranking in YouTube search
How do I get my videos to show up in YouTube search results?
5 min read
YouTube search is smaller than the Home feed, but it converts differently: viewers arrive with intent, watch longer, and subscribe at higher rates. Ranking there is a mix of straightforward SEO and honest audience-fit signals.
Start with a real query
Pick a query where YouTube's autocomplete suggests it, and where the current top three results are getting real views but are beatable — old, low-production, or answering only part of the question. Do this before writing the script.
Put the query in the title, once
One clear use of the query in the title, one in the first line of the description, and one spoken naturally in the first minute is enough. Repeating it further reads as stuffing without adding ranking benefit.
Descriptions are for context, not keyword lists
A short, useful description that summarises the video and links out to relevant resources performs better than a wall of tags. Chapter timestamps also feed rich results in search.
Watch satisfaction, not just position
YouTube tracks whether searchers who click return to the results page. High return rates push videos back down. The single biggest satisfaction lever is answering the query directly in the first minute — before any tangents.
